How Do I Get Rid of Cigarette Odor?

Cigarettes and Nicotine Leave Nasty Odors!

I bet you know the awful and head ache inducing smell of cigarette smoke.  This horrible odor can get trapped in our cars, stuck in our homes,  and it lingers in our clothes.   Cigarettes Smoke always leaves a smelly trail, and sometimes that smelly trail is hard to get rid of!

So How Does One Get Rid of the Smell of Cigarette Smoke?

First, let us be clear.  If you are trying to mask the smell of cigarette smoke with an “air freshener,”  “ITS NOT WORKING!!”

Let’s put it another way…. If my white, fluffy dog “Lucy” were to crap a “little turd” in the middle of my living room, it would stink.  Even if I got some perfume to spray that “little turd,” it would still stink!!  You can’t mask the odor, you must remove the poop!

When it comes to Lingering Cigarette Smoke, I give similar advice.

“Don’t mask the odor, chemically alter the odor and neutralize it!”

My first suggestion to you is to purchase an inexpensive can of ZEP Smoke Odor Eliminator

Zep Smoke Odor Eliminator

Sure, it does have a fresh scent, but more importantly, it neutralizes the cigarette odor.  That is the key.

If you have a “smelly area” that is contaminated with the smell of nicotine, I highly recommend you try this product first.  As of the time of this writing, a 16 ounce can is only about $5.  That’s a small expense.  Go buy some (or order from my Amazon Link above 🙂 and spray the heck out of that area.  Give it a few hours, and you may just be surprised at the improvement.

For Extreme Cases of Smoke Smell, its time to buy Kilz.

If a person has smoked in a house for a long time, you will notice that the walls will begin to “yellow.”  This is an extreme case.  Frankly, I am not an expert on this topic, but my suggestion would be, if it were sheet rock walls:

    1. Try to clean the Walls as best as possible
    2. Prime the walls with Kilz Max – Its a Primer / Sealer for Stains and Odor – If water based version does not work, you may want to try an oil based or shellac based.
    3. Repaint the walls

OZONE Machines to Remove Smoke Odor – Another option out there is “Ozone Machines” for Carpet Removal.  Frankly, I don’t know much about them.  If the above suggestions do not work, it may be worth a try.

Final Thoughts about Eliminating Smoke Odor

The science and technology of “odor elimination” is pretty amazing.  I have listed another item here as well called Spartan Airlift Smoke and Odor Eliminator.  There are several good “Odor Eliminators” on the market.  Just check the cleaning aisle at your local Home Depot, Lowes, etc

The Key to Fighting Powerful Smoke Odors is not to “Mask it.”  The Key is to Chemically Alter the Odor to “Neutralize it.”

That sounds complicated, and frankly, the science behind how these Odor Elimination Products work is beyond me.

However, I suspect you don’t care as much about “how it works” as you care about “if it works!”

I think you will be surprised how good products like ZEP SMOKE ODOR ELIMINATOR really do work.  🙂

So, don’t buy an “Air Freshener,” buy an “Odor Neutralizer!”
